Computer Science Prof. Earns Award to Develop Accessibility Curriculum

Dr. Sarah J. Huibregtse, assistant professor of computer science at the University of Mount Union, was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from Teach Access to develop a curriculum at Mount Union focused on educating students on accessible web design.

Computer Science Prof. Earns Award to Develop Accessibility CurriculumHuibregtse was one of 10 professors from across the country to be selected for this award and the only one from the state of Ohio. The money will be used to develop modules, presentations, exercises or curriculum enhancements/changes that introduce the fundamental concepts and skills of accessible design and development in existing, classroom-based courses.

“The award funds will be used to support the research and development of accessibility related outcomes to be implemented throughout our web course sequence, along with the creation of a pre- and post-assessments that would be implemented in the first semester web sequence of courses (CSW103 and CSW113),” said Huibregtse. “By the end of the first semester students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency with the accessibility outcomes when they develop and publish their web pages.”
