21 Sep OWU Fall Performance “Inter/Sect,” Oct. 2 through 4
Ohio Wesleyan University’s fall theatrical event, “Inter/Sect,” is a student-created exploration of “the societal boundaries we create, accept, and ignore.” Set for four performance dates from Oct. 2 to 4, “Inter/Sect” will feature scenes, monologues, sketches, dance, poetry, and more.
The show is being facilitated and led by Ares Harper, OWU Class of 2019, in collaboration with theatre instructor Bradford Sadler, M.F.A., OWU Class of 2005.
For the piece, Sadler said, the students were asked to create material “based on their experiences with the huge social issues we have been going through in 2020.”
Harper said the show is a montage of 16 original pieces presented in two parts over the three days.
“All the pieces could stand alone, but it shouldn’t,” Harper said. “It can’t. If we’ve learned anything from the past six months, it’s that nothing is truly experienced in a vacuum.
“The show is intended for mature audiences,” Harper said. “It includes adult language and tackles a range of topics such as sexual assault, police brutality, mental illness, and more. But in today’s time, these topics of discussion are not much different than anything flooding our media on a daily basis.”
The cast includes 11 students – 10 in-person on campus and one remote actor, he said. The student-actors are Ashley Adcock of Hilliard, Ohio; Dyna Bresson of Columbus, Ohio; Ernest Chando of Yonkers, New York; Alex Dolph of Middletown, Ohio; Aaron Eicher of West Salem, Ohio; Miko Harper of Sandy Springs, Georgia; Max Haupt of Madison, New Jersey; Carly Sanders of Painesville, Ohio; Elizabeth Van Deusen of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Margaret Welsh of Ashville, Ohio; and Chloe Williams of Wilmington, Ohio.
Harper will serve as stage director for the production with Chadwynn Knutson, part-time instructor, as technical director and designer, and student Welsh as costume head.
“Inter/Sect” will be performed on the Main Stage of Ohio Wesleyan’s Chappelear Drama Center and will include a small in-person audience of Ohio Wesleyan students and employees. The general public is invited to watch any or all of the free presentations at www.owu.edu/stream. Performance dates and times are 8 p.m. Oct. 2; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 3; and 2 p.m. Oct. 4.
