UF’s Second Prime the Pump Gears Up for Prep Week

To help prepare incoming college freshmen for an outstanding start to their college career this fall, the faculty in the Colleges of Sciences, Pharmacy, and Health Professions will be hosting University of Findlay’s second annual Prime the Pump college prep week.

UF’s Second Prime the Pump Gears Up for Prep WeekStarting college classes, especially those in the sciences, can be a bit daunting with more challenges and higher expectations from faculty. This is especially important this year considering the possible gaps given the switch to online learning in the spring of 2020.

Sandra Earle, Pharm.D., associate professor of teaching in pharmaceutical sciences and associate dean for assessment, explained Prime the Pump offers a unique experience to incoming college freshmen as it allows them to establish a relationship with their professors and fellow classmates before the semester begins. It’s, “a good mix of social and academic preparation that builds confidence,” she said.

According to a survey of last year’s Prime the Pump participants, 100% of future Oilers who participated would choose to attend again if given the choice and would recommend that others attend.

During Prime the Pump Prep Week held August 2-7, students will:

  • Participate in six hours of daily instruction in the areas of biology and chemistry
  • Get to know the biology and chemistry faculty they will be taking classes from during their time at UF
  • Participate in fun activities, study skills sessions, and team-building opportunities
  • Get to know other new students at UF
  • Have fun and get ready to officially start classes on August 17!

The decision will be made by the first week of July regarding if Prime the Pump Prep Week will be held virtually or in-person. If the event is held in-person, students will stay on campus in the room that will be their actual room this fall. Proper safety, sanitization, and social distancing guidelines recommended by the state and local health officials will be followed.

Cost of the Prime the Pump Prep Week will largely depend on if it is held virtually or in-person. The deadline for registration is July 1, 2020 and payment is not due at the time of registration. Once the decision has been made if Prep Week will be held in-person or virtually, registrants will receive a link to enable them to pay for the camp online.
