08 Jun Muskingum Archery Is the Newest Intercollegiate Sport on Campus
The Muskingum University Athletic Department announced it will launch archery as a new intercollegiate sport during the 2020-21 academic year. The addition of this sport brings the total number of varsity sport programs offered by the University to 23.
Muskingum will be the only school in the Ohio Athletic Conference to field an archery team and one of the only NCAA schools in the state to offer it as a varsity sport. Archery, which involves teams representing their institutions at USA Archery sanctioned events, offers recreational and competitive opportunities for barebow, recurve, compound, and bowhunter divisions. Muskingum will begin its team as a club sport and transition it to a varsity sport starting in the fall of 2021.
“The opportunity to add a sport that has such strong roots at the interscholastic level in the region is exciting,” said Muskingum Vice President and Athletic Director Steve Brockelbank. “The support from Muskingum President Dr. Sue Hasseler to begin an archery program has been tremendous. The addition of archery will allow prospective Muskies to continue their passion for the sport while also receiving an excellent education at Muskingum.”
Muskingum is currently in the process of searching for a head coach to lead the archery program. Individuals interested in the archery coaching position can contact Steve Brockelbank at [email protected].
The mission of USA Archery is to provide the necessary resources to foster strong athlete participation, competition, and training in the sport of archery. The program sanctions more than 200 events annually and conducts indoor, outdoor and collegiate National Championships as well as the United States Archery Team Qualifier Series.
